Team project #2 - Team Ireland

Summary:


In our research we go through Irelands representatives campaign for Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in the social media and share some light on why their campaign wasn't very successful in the end.

We answer such research questions as:

- What kind of campaign does the representative of Ireland have on Facebook and Twitter?
- Are there fan communities in other countries? How do these communities operate?
- How does the representative use social media when the voting process is ongoing?

Irelands representative for Eurovision Song Contest 2014 was band named Can-Linn, featuring a Dublin-based singer Kasey Smith. They performed at the second semifinal 8.5.2014, but did not make it to the grand final.

Can-Linn had it’s own social media channels on Twitter, Youtube and Facebook. From these Twitter and Facebook were researched more closely, since they had more visible interaction. The most interaction with the fanbase happened through Twitter, but Facebook was a close second. The hashtag #YesWeCanLinn was used to promote the performers and to try and make it a trending hashtag on Twitter. Their interaction on the social media channels changed through the course of the campaign, the peak being on May 8th when the 2nd Semi-Final was held.

  1. Wow! You had a few questions there!

    The first chart, is it made by usig hashtag #yeswecanlinn? Or did they actually post 58 tweets per day?!

    I really like the part where you analyse what went wrong. It is important for everyone wanting to use social media in promotion to realise how it's done (e.g. using continuing hashtags or gaining new followers). Hashtags are weirdly important. And it is a bit weird for me that they didn't do a proper job as Ireland is very active in Eurovision field, I came across of their webpage (Eurovision Ireland or something like it) again and again during my own researches.

    It would have been nice if you could have identified the unanswered questions in the end so one wouldn't have to check them separately.

  2. Quite an exhaustive list of research questions in the report! In the blog post you raised question on how social media was used during voting period, which I found quite interesting. The report I think handles the 2nd semifinal as a whole and doesn't mention specifically IF something changed when voting started. Between the lines I read that it didn't...

    I loved the analysis on their Twitter usage, about the use of hash tags and target audience. Nice work!

  3. Thank you for your work Team Ireland! Your report was an interesting read! It was especially nice that you also analysed the mistakes made by your contestant. This felt relevant since she didn't make it into the final.

    You started with ten research question which might have been a bit much since some of them didn't get a good answer. The answers you gave were really good in general though. You were also able to analyze broader themes, like how important it is to connect to people across borders by introducing elements known to unite people across Europe into the performances. The observation about the lack of hashtags was interesting.

    I really liked the Twitter and Facebook activity charts you made. It was also nice that you referenced the sources in your text. Great that you also included the Youtube channel in your analysis and made an interesting observation about Youtube comment response behavior.

    To sum up, your report was easy to read but filled with interesting information. The amount of research questions could perhaps have been slightly smaller to ensure each question got a good answer. It was refreshing to read your criticisms towards the campaign and you made sharp observations in that area. Thank you again for all your work!

  4. Thanks for the comments! :) There were maybe too many questions, but I think those at least helped us with our direction. And for me it was interesting to analyze Can-Linn's loss, because it showed what mistakes not to make in a social media campaign :)

  5. Here's feedback from UK team:

    There was a lot of research questions, maybe a bit too many. We had the same problem in our own project. You could’ve concentrated more on some specific ones instead of all. But on the other hand, now we get a wider look at the topic, so that is okay too!

    You gathered some good data and showed it in a simple graphic way, that was easy to read. It seems like the fact that Ireland didn’t make the actual competition did affect your working a bit, but actually it was interesting to read about your analysis on why you thought they failed and what could’ve been done better. You had some interesting points to this. Your analysis on twitter campaigning was good, and would be interesting to know how Can-Linn’s social media presence continues after the fall-off.

    Your work was overall easy to read and understand, had good points and analysis. It’s understandable that it was left quite short due to the fact that Ireland didn’t continue in the competition. Good job altogether!

  6. Thanks for the feedback! :) You have good points and well thought arguments. Maybe we did have too many research questions, but as Heidi mentioned above, i think it helped us with the research to look the campaign with several different angles :)
